Becoming an IRS-Authorized E-Filer: Essential Steps and Requirements

noviembre 07, 2023

How to Become an Authorized IRS E-File Provider

An Authorized IRS E-File Provider is an individual or business sanctioned by the IRS to partake in the IRS e-filing process. E-Filing is a mandatory service that allows for the swift and secure submission of personal and corporate tax returns to the IRS through computer software. It’s essential to note that you cannot submit e-filed returns without authorized tax software.

To become a certified tax preparer, you must meet the following requirements:

  1. Register with E-Services: a) You must possess a valid Social Security Number (SSN) or an Employer Identification Number (EIN). b) Ensure that you are current with your federal personal taxes. c) Maintain a physical mailing address within the United States.
  2. Obtain an EFIN (Electronic Filing Identification Number): An EFIN is a unique number issued by the IRS to identify the principal of a business that has completed the e-file application process and passed a suitability check. This number is crucial for electronically filing tax returns.
  3. Acquire a PTIN (Preparer Tax Identification Number): A PTIN is a specific number assigned to identify tax preparers or anyone who assists in preparing federal tax returns for compensation. It’s mandatory for all preparers, and they must renew their PTIN annually. There is a $64.25 fee to obtain a PTIN, with a $63.00 annual renewal cost.

Note: All Enrolled Agents must also possess a PTIN.

  4. Obtain an EIN (Employer Identification Number): The EIN, also known as a Federal Tax Identification Number, is used to identify a business entity. The application for an EIN is cost-free, and the EIN is issued immediately upon successful completion and validation during the online application process.
  5. Ensure Eligibility: It’s important to note that individuals who have been convicted of a crime, filed for bankruptcy, or owe debts to any federal or state organization do not qualify to become E-File service providers for the IRS.

Becoming an Authorized IRS E-File Provider is a multi-step process that requires careful attention to detail and adherence to IRS guidelines. Meeting these requirements is vital to ensure the smooth and secure submission of tax returns for both individuals and businesses.
