If the amended return shows a balance due, the Electronic Funds Withdrawal (Screen PMT in Drake) must be used to pay such balance due in order to be able to e-file, otherwise, the amended return would need to be paper-filed. If the amended return shows a refund, the IRS will mail a check to the taxpayer’s mailing address.

Please also note that Form 1040X can be e-filed only if the original return was also e-filed and accepted by the IRS. The original filing does not have to have been completed through your office, but must have been e-filed and accepted through an approved IRS provider.
